I think pointing out weaker factions was a lot easier in the older games, like Medieval 2.Yes I get what you are saying. I think pointing out weaker factions was a lot easier in the older games, like Medieval 2. But yes, in multiplayer they are completely useless (unless you do a sea battle of course, which I don't think are very popular). So they are not exactly weak in the campaign. I would rather say that about the Burgundians, mostly because they almost completely lack sword infantry.Īs for the Viking Forefathers, the Danish immunity to sea-sickness is very nice in itself, but considering that the AI doesn't seem to be aware of how vulnerable its own transport fleets are, it can be so strong that is almost feels like an exploit. On top of that, I don't think the Saxons are the weakest "Barbarian Kingdoms" faction. So "useless" is perhaps not the right word in this case. Most people play campaigns purely because they think a certain faction is more interesting than others, quite often even because they just want to play their ancestors and their relatives.

Not only because it depends on a lot of different factors like geographical and financial starting situation (which can all still be more or less measured to a certain extent though), but because singleplayer campaigns are not a contest.

While it is indeed true that some factions (or, depending on the game, weapons, character classes or whatever) are stronger than others (the notion that it all depends on "how you use it" is outright retarded by the way), I don't think it is that easy for a Total War singleplayer campaign. So there is the question which classification is preferable. Saxons count as "att_sub_cult_barbarian_germanic_north", just like the "Viking Forefathers". Are you talking about multiplayer or campaign? You only speak about units, so that does sound like multiplayer to me, but the mention of "culture groups" sounds like you are referring to the campaign.Īnd by the way, culture groups (aren't they even called faction groups in the game files? Not sure right now.) are just about the faction traits, the real in-game culture is treated differently.
